Playing Position: Left Back
Nickname: Mart
He was: always told to allow for the slice
Player Profile:
Part of the glorious Reserve team that did the Runner-Up double of league and cup under the
captaincy of Dan Savill, Martin was the Reserves regular left back for several years, not bad for
a 4th team linesman at college. In the Old Boys, his style reflected that of his defensive team
mates, the likes of Ged, Jim and Rodney. Clean sheets at this time were rarely due to defensive
finesse, more from opposition players giving their shins a break from a regular kicking.
A bookie around the time of his graduation, he had no desire to bring this into his footballing
career, hence he had no appreciation that the odds were - the right winger was faster than him,
he'd have to use his left foot playing at left back, and arriving consistently late in the tackle
would result in a booking.
Martin was easy to identify on the pitch, he was the one running backwards shouting "Martin's!",
followed by "Oh sh*t!" as the ball sailed over his head. Many a fine defender could cope with such
errors due to their speed of turn, and pace over the ten yards to catch the breaking striker.
Unfortunately, Martin had neither.
Nevertheless, the now south coast resident is still a stalwart of 100+ Old Boys appearances.
